A Potters Needle (also called a pin tool) is an incredibly versatile, sharp metal needle set into a handle. It is used for everything from trimming and measuring to carving. Consider also the Potters Long Blade Knife and the Fine Sculpting Tools Set.

The Potters Needle uses include:

• Trimming Rims: Used while throwing on the wheel to slice off uneven tops and create a perfectly level rim.
• Scoring & Slipping: Scratching crosshatch marks into leather-hard clay pieces so they can be securely joined together.
• Measuring Depth: Inserting the needle straight down through a clay base to check thickness so you don’t accidentally trim through the bottom.
• Popping Air Bubbles: Poking holes to release trapped air in wet clay models or air pockets that can ruin your piece in the kiln.
• Carving & Detailing: Drawing fine lines, cutting out slab patterns, and executing detailed sgraffito designs.
• Clearing Holes: Unclogging closed forms, glaze holes, or beads
