Description
Lumograph Aquarell Graphite Pencils are premium quality with a special lead formulation. They are also water soluble graphite pencils, which are great for shading and adding interest to sketching. Set of 6 in a tin. Also Available Lumograph Sketching Set of 6 or !2 and Lumograph Black Artist Pencils.
Graphite Aquarelle pencils can be used dry like regular pencils or with water to create watercolour-like effects. To use them dry, draw and shade as you normally would, which allows for erasures and adjustments. To activate the watercolour effect, apply water with a brush to the dry graphite lines to blend them. Then draw directly onto wet paper for an artistic dispersion of the lines. You can also lift graphite from a palette with a wet brush for a painterly application.
Dry techniques
- Draw and shade: Use the pencils just like a regular graphite pencil for sketches, value studies, and detailed work.
- Layering: Build up value by layering dry marks, which can be done before or after adding water.
- Erasing: Dry marks are easily erasable, but become more permanent once water is added.
Wet techniques
- Apply water to dry marks: Draw your image first, then use a wet paintbrush to blend the lines into smooth washes. This is a common method for creating soft gradients and achieving deep dark values.
- Draw on wet paper: Sketch directly onto wet paper for soft, diffused lines to create an artistic and spontaneous effect.
- Lift graphite with a brush: Dip a wet brush into a pile of powdered graphite (which can be created by rubbing the pencil) and apply it to the paper like a watercolour paint.
- Control the water: Use a dry brush or paper towel to lift excess water and graphite.
Blending and layering
- Combine techniques: After a wash has dried, add more dry pencil on top to refine details or to deepen values.
- Use traditional tools: After the water has dried, use traditional blending tools like a Q-tip or blending stump to smudge the graphite further.
- Reactivate dried marks: Graphite can be reactivated with water even after it has dried, allowing you to rework areas.
