Description

Jacquard Methocel is a synthetic thickener that provides a viscous surface for fabric and paper marbling. It is also used in book arts as a paper sizing for paste papers and to slow the drying time of PVA glues. Compared to natural thickeners, Methocel is more economical and longer lasting. Also Available Jacquard Carageenan.

The product (methylcellulose) is a synthetic thickener used primarily as the liquid base for fabric and paper marbling. It provides the viscous surface upon which artists float paints or inks to create swirling patterns before transferring them.

Key Crafting Uses for Jacquard Methocel:

  • Marbling Medium: It is a more economical and longer-lasting alternative to natural thickeners like carrageenan. The solution holds paints on the surface so they can be combed into designs.
  • Paper Sizing: Bookbinders and calligraphers use it as a binder or size to prepare paper, preventing paints and inks from bleeding or absorbing too quickly.
  • Book Arts: Used for making paste papers and slowing the drying time of PVA glues.

How to Prepare It:
To use it for marbling, dissolve roughly 1 oz of Methocel powder into 1 gallon of warm tap water (or about 2.5 to 3 tablespoons per gallon). Mix it slowly and leave to rest (sometimes overnight) so all the air bubbles rise and the liquid clears.
