Description

Jacquard Carrageenan is a natural seaweed gelling agent that provides a viscous surface for marbling on fabric and paper. The natural seaweed derivative is used as a thickening agent to create “marbling size”. This viscous liquid base allows marbling paints to float and spread across the water’s surface without sinking, making it essential for traditional water marbling on both fabric and paper. To use Jacquard Carrageenan effectively:

1. Mix the Base

• Ratio: Use 2 tablespoons of carrageenan powder per approx 3.5 Litres of water. Use distilled water to prevent minerals from interfering with the gelling process.
• Blending: Slowly sprinkle the powder into the water while blending with an electric hand blender or whisk. Blend for about 5–10 minutes until the powder is fully dispersed and free of clumps.

2. Let It Rest

• The mixture will be foamy and have lumps initially. Cover the container and let it rest for 8 to 24 hours at room temperature.
• This resting period allows the carrageenan to fully hydrate and all air bubbles to rise to the surface.

3. Pour and Marble

• Once the mixture is clear and has the consistency of a thin gel or skim milk, gently pour it into your marbling tray to a depth of 3-5cm.
• You can now drop, splatter, and comb your water-based paints across the surface.

4. Store and Handle

• Shelf Life: The mixture will keep in the refrigerator for about 5–7 days, but only 1–2 days at room temperature. Discard it if it becomes cloudy or develops an odour.
• Prepping Paper: Before placing paper on your marbled bath, you must treat it with an alum solution (mordant) so the paint adheres to the fibres
