How to use Stoneware Brush On Glaze:

Stir or shake your stoneware glaze until it reaches a “melted milkshake” consistency. Using a large, soft-bristled brush, apply 2–4 even coats, allowing each layer to dry until it no longer looks “wet” before applying the next. To ensure a smooth, streak-free finish, apply each subsequent coat in a different direction (cross-hatching). Avoid over-brushing, which can lift previously applied layers, and load your brush generously so the glaze flows onto the piece rather than being “scrubbed” on.

Best Practices for Stoneware Brush-On Glazes

  • Prep the Piece: Ensure your bisque-fired pottery is clean and free of dust before starting.
  • Choosing a Brush: Use a soft, absorbent brush (like a hake, mop, or fan brush). Stiff brushes can leave harsh, choppy stroke marks.
  • Loading the Brush: Dip the brush into the glaze and saturate the bristles. If the brush isn’t loaded enough, you will get thin, uneven, or “streaky” layers.
  • Consistency: If the glaze has thickened, add a small amount of water until it reaches a smooth, pourable consistency.

Application Technique:

  • Lay it on: Instead of aggressive painting, “lay” the glaze onto the surface like peanut butter.
  • Cross-hatching: Apply the first coat in one direction, the second at a 90-degree angle to the first, and a third in the original direction. This evens out the thickness and hides brush strokes.
  • Edges and Rims: Save the rims for last to avoid excessive handling.

Troubleshooting:

  • Glaze looking thin/streaky? You likely need more coats or a more heavily loaded brush.
  • Glaze lifting? You are likely over-brushing or applying new layers before the previous one is dry.
  • Drips: If you accidentally drip glaze, you can gently wipe it off or clean the surface once the glaze is dry, depending on the desired effect.
