For an equivalent Pastel with a greater colour range try the Holbein Artist Soft Pastels. Available individually and in Sets of 12, 24, 36, 48, 72 and 144.

To use start with a textured paper and apply colour using the side for broad strokes or the edge for detail. Blend colours directly on the paper with your fingers, a paper stump, or a soft brush to create gradients and new shades. You can layer colours to build up depth and mix them on the paper itself by applying one over another and blending them.

The Process For Using Soft Pastels:

The process for using soft pastels involves preparing a textured surface and then applying pastel in layers. Various preprepared coloured  Pastel Papers such as Mi Teintes, Prisma Favini or Colourfix are available for purchase. By using various techniques like blending and stippling, create texture and tone and finish with a fixative if desired. Start with lighter colours and light pressure, then build up layers of colour and detail. Blend colours using your fingers, soft cloths, or blending stumps for smooth transitions. After finishing the work use a fixative to help hold layers and prevent smudging.
