Isopropyl alcohol (IPA) is a versatile solvent in art, primarily used as a blending solution and diluent for alcohol inks.   It is also used as a cleaning agent for various art supplies. Its fast evaporation and solvent properties allow for unique, free-flowing abstract effects.

Key uses of Derivan Isopropyl Alcohol in art include:

• Creating Alcohol Ink Art: The most common use is as a blending and diluting agent for alcohol inks on non-porous surfaces.  This includes yupo paper, ceramic tiles, glass, or metal). The alcohol reactivates and moves the concentrated ink pigments. This allows you to create organic, marbled, or abstract patterns by tilting the surface or using an air source.  Air sources include a hair dryer or Alcohol blower.
• Making Custom Inks: Artists can create their own vibrant, custom alcohol inks by mixing high-proof (91% or higher) isopropyl alcohol with dyes.  Also add to some fluid acrylic paints such as Amsterdam Acrylics.
• Texturing Effects with Acrylics: When drops of IPA are applied to wet acrylic paint (often in fluid/pouring art), the alcohol repels the water-based paint.  This creates fascinating cellular or lacy textures and patterns as it evaporates.
