Bruynzeel Expression Aquarell Pencils are a great brand of watercolour pencil in a sturdy, reusable metal storage tin. Sets of 25 or 36. Using Aquarelle Pencils:

• Use Bruynzeel Expression Aquarell Pencils by applying them dry like a normal coloured pencil. Then activate the colour with a wet paintbrush to blend and create a watercolour effect. Alternatively, you can use the pencils on damp paper or lift the pigment directly from the pencil. Use a wet brush on the lead and apply it to the paper like paint. Build up colour and texture by layering dry pencil and water applications.

Dry Techniques:

• Apply colour with a brush Dip a wet brush into the pencil’s pigment by touching the brush to the pencil tip. This allows you to apply a wash of colour to the paper, similar to a watercolour pan.
• Use as a traditional coloured pencil Use the pencils dry to draw and colour as you would with regular coloured pencils. Then go over the dry areas with a wet brush to blend them.
• Create a palette Draw swatches of colour onto a separate piece of paper. Follow up by using a wet brush to lift the colour from the swatches to use as a wash.

Wet Techniques:

• Use on damp paper Lightly dampening the paper with water, use the Aquarell Pencils to apply colour as this creates a soft, blended effect.
• Apply water to the paper Use the pencils to draw first then apply water with a brush to blend the colours and create a watercolour effect.
• Use on dry paper Try using dry pencils on dry paper then add water with a brush to blend and create a watercolour effect. This technique allows for layering and texture because you can go back and forth between dry and wet applications.
