Description

Jacquard Marbling Colours are professional-grade, highly pigmented acrylic paints specifically formulated to spread evenly on the surface of thickened water (the “marbling size”). They are designed for marbling on fabric, paper, wood, canvas, and other porous or semi-porous surfaces. Carageenan and Methocel available.

To Use Jacquard Marbling Colours:

1. Prepare the Marbling Size

• What you need: Carrageenan (powdered seaweed) or Methocel mixed with water according to package instructions. It should have a slightly thick, slick consistency.
• The Process: Pour the mixed size into a shallow tray (like a baking dish) and let it rest to get rid of air bubbles.

2. Prep your Fabric or Paper

• For fabric: You must pre-treat it with Jacquard Alum. Dissolve 1 cup of alum in 3.5 Litres of water, soak the fabric, wring it out, and let it dry completely. This acts as a mordant so the colours permanently stick to the fabric.
• For paper: No special treatment is required.

3. Drip the Paint

• Gently drop the marbling colours onto the surface of the liquid using an eyedropper, squeeze bottle, or by flicking a brush.
• The Rule of Spreading: Each colour spreads to a different extent. Black generally spreads the most, while white or heavily pigmented colours spread less. Add a single drop of Synthetic Gall to your paint in a separate palette to make it spread further or force other colours out of the way.

4. Swirl Your Design

• Drag a stylus, toothpick, or comb through the floating paint to create traditional patterns

5. Print the Design

• Carefully lay your fabric or paper flat onto the surface of the liquid. The paint transfers to the material almost instantly.
• Lift the paper/fabric off the liquid surface, rinse gently with water (if required), and lay it flat to dry.

6. Heat Set (Fabric Only)

• Once the marbled fabric is completely dry, you must heat set the paint by ironing it on medium heat for 3–5 minutes so that it is soft to the touch and completely washfast.
